Empathy

Real Empathy. It's Rarer Than You Think. 😊

Most people think they're empathetic.

And most people are — up to a point.

But real empathy? The deep kind? That's something different entirely.

Real empathy isn't waiting for your turn to speak. It isn't nodding along while mentally preparing your response. It isn't saying I know exactly how you feel — because honestly, you don't. Nobody does. Not completely.

Real empathy is sitting with someone in their pain without trying to fix it, minimise it or rush them through it.

It's saying — I see you. I hear you. And I'm not going anywhere.

That sounds simple. It isn't. Most of us are so uncomfortable with other people's pain that we immediately try to make it better. We offer solutions. Silver linings. Worse case stories to make theirs seem smaller.

At least you've got your health. Others have it worse. You'll be fine.

That isn't empathy. That's discomfort dressed up as comfort.

Brené Brown — one of the greatest voices on human connection — says empathy is feeling with people, not feeling for them. There is a world of difference between the two.

In my therapy room empathy isn't a technique. It's the foundation of everything. It's what makes people feel safe enough to say the things they've never said out loud.

And in 17 years I've seen what happens when someone is truly heard — possibly for the first time in their life.

It changes everything.

You deserve that. 💛
