Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
OCD, as it is sometimes called, is a repetitive obsessive disorder. These can be feelings, thoughts or behaviours that can be brought on by anxiety. As the anxiety heightens, so the obsessions become more pronounced.
Avoidance techniques are often used when not wanting to confront the obsession, thus empowering the obsession into a greater fear.
We all have negative and unpleasant thoughts from time to time, for most these thoughts fade away and other thoughts take thier place. People with OCD feel they cannot stop these negative thoughts, and they magnify in ones mind.
Obsessions are many, some may include:
Levels of hygiene and cleaning
Hoarding and collecting things
Fear of not sleeping
Agrophobia
Fear of a door being unlocked and appliances left on
Fear of falling or fainting
Claustrophobia
Fear of going mad
A need of everything to be perfect
It is unknown what causes Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It may have been triggered by a trauma, or event.
OCD can be extremely distressing, and prolonged behaviours can bring on depression and low self esteem. Obsessive behaviours can be embarrassing and time consuming.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can be very helpful in encouraging and exploring where these obsessions started, what is realistic and what is in your imagination. Looking at what these obsessions are and how to turn around your way of thinking into a more positive state of being.
Hypnosis can be helpful as a way of learning how to relax.
